Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month (JDAM) is observed each year in
February, to promote inclusion and accessibility by raising awareness about
disabilities within Jewish communities.
The sameness and the difference: Jewish disabilities intersect with Jewish
identity. Judaism is the only world religion that is also a race of people, a
culture. So while disabilities diversely affect people of all faiths and cultures,
there are some unique aspects of the Jewish culture that create a significant
difference in the lives of Jewish people with disabilities.
Many challenges of Jews with disabilities relate to their heritage, such as
access to Hebrew School and Jewish education, participation in synagogue
life and communal activities, and the ability to fulfill religious obligations. For
example, individuals with physical disabilities may have difficulty
participating in certain Jewish rituals that require physical movement or may
need accommodations to access Torah scrolls or prayer books. Similarly,
individuals with intellectual disabilities may struggle with Jewish learning or
may need additional support to participate in communal activities.
Another significant aspect of Jewish disabilities is the history of discrimination
and persecution that Jews with disabilities have faced. Throughout history,
Jews with disabilities have been stigmatized, isolated, and discriminated
against, with many being institutionalized or excluded from mainstream society.
Today, Jews with disabilities still face challenges related to employment,
education, and access to healthcare and social services.
Finally, Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of
inclusion and accessibility within the Jewish community. By raising awareness
about the unique challenges faced by Jews with disabilities and promoting
initiatives to address these challenges, we can work towards a more inclusive
and accessible community for all. This includes initiatives such as creating
accessible synagogues and Jewish community centers, providing inclusive
education and employment opportunities, and promoting the participation of
Jews with disabilities in all aspects of Jewish life.
